Must-Have Essentials for Dog Camping: Your Ultimate Guide to Dog Camping Gear

Planning a camping trip with your furry friend? This guide will help you gather everything you need for a fun and safe adventure with your pup!

I’ve been camping with my dogs for years, and now I have two energetic puppies– one ten months old and the other six months old – joining the adventure. Over time, I’ve been asked many times about the essential gear I bring to keep my pups comfortable and safe while camping.

If it’s your first time camping with your dogs, I strongly recommend reading my post on how to prepare for camping with your dog(s) and my 10 essential tips for an enjoyable camping experience!

Creating a checklist of the dog gear you’ll need when packing for camping is a game-changer. This way, you won’t forget anything essential, and your trip will be much smoother. Keep reading to download your free dog camping gear guide! After camping, you can always update the list based on what you found useful or unnecessary.

One tip I swear by is packing all of your dog’s gear in one pack. This makes it a lot easier when packing and looking for things your dog(s) need.

Food + Water

Every dog has different food needs, so bring the appropriate amount of food, treats, and fresh drinking water for the duration of your camping trip with your dog(s).

1. Food and water bowls

2. Extra food for dog(s)

3. Treats for training and rewards

4. Food carrier bag

5. Water (if your campsite doesn’t have a water spigot)

6. Collapsible measuring cup (if your food isn’t pre-portioned)

Dog Gear

This is the area where many dog parents often overlook.

7. Extra leashes and collar or harness

8. 10 to 30 ft leash, preferably biothane for easy cleaning

9. Dog poop bags

10. GPS tracking collar

Comfort + Toys

Camping is much more enjoyable when your dogs are happy and tired! I never go camping without these items:

11. Water-resistant dog bed

12. Dog sleeping bag (optional, for additional warmth during cooler camping months)

13. Elevated cot

14. Outdoor blanket

15. Outdoor dog toys

Grooming

For those times when your dog gets a bit too dirty, these items come in handy:

16. Towels for your dog

17. Pet wipes

18. Brush (depending on your dog’s coat)

Health

A healthy dog means a fun camping experience. You do not want to find yourself in a situation where your dog gets sick and you don’t have the appropriate tools to help. Always bring these items, whether you're camping, hiking, or on vacation with your dog(s):

19. Dog first aid kit

20. Any medication your dog requires

21. Tick remover

22. Vaccine records

Accommodation

I do not recommend leaving your dog outside the tent, as it can be very dangerous. Wildlife could pose a threat, or your dog might be tempted to chase after something. Additionally, it can get quite cold at night. For these reasons, your dog should sleep with you inside the tent.

23. Larger tent

24. Sleeping pad/mattress

25. Carabiners

26. Optional: foldable kennel or crate

Spring/ Summer Gear

27. Dog life jacket

28. Rain jacket

29. Dog-friendly insect repellent

30. Cooling towel or cooling jacket

Fall/ Winter Gear

31. Dog jacket

32. Winter dog booties

33. Extra blankets
