Why I chose to Hike Mount Marcy

In July 2016, my husband and I unintentionally summited Mt. Washington, New Hampshire’s high peak- and that spark launched a goal to climb the highest peak in every state. As my 30th birthday neared, I told Anthony (my then-boyfriend) I wanted to summit Mount Marcy. He surprised me with a full backpacking trip and in June 2021, we made it to the top.

That hike became one of the most unforgettable moments of my life- not only for the challenge and beauty, but because Anthony proposed to me at the summit!

WHERE TO PARK FOR THE MOUNT MARCY HIKE

Park at Adirondack Loj, a popular trailhead for hikes in the High Peaks Wilderness. Parking is $15 (cash only) and fills quickly- especially during summer weekends. Aim to arrive by 6-7am.

If full, South Meadow Trailhead is a backup about a mile away. Be aware this adds 2 more miles around trip to your Mount Marcy Hike.

Mount Marcy via the Van Hoevenberg Trail

We began at Adirondack Loj and hiked 2.1 miles to Marcy Dam where we set up camp. Arriving early gave us our pick of peaceful riverfront sites. We used the afternoon to hike Tabletop and Phelps Mountain, both excellent warm-ups with rewarding views (especially from Phelps!).

That night, we stargazed and slept under the pines, resting up for summit day.

The next morning, we hit the trail before sunrise, climbing 2.4 miles to Indian Falls, a beautiful cascade and perfect mid-hike rest stop.

From there, the trail became steeper. As we passed treeline, the 360-degree summit views opened up- and left us speechless.

An Unforgettable Proposal at the Summit

As we scrambled to the top, Anthony dropped to one knee. I said YES (of course!) and we celebrated with lunch overlooking the High Peaks. It was wild, joyful, surreal- everything you could dream of at 5,344 feet.

Descent and More Adirondack magic

We descended past Lake Tear of the Clouds and crossed scenic bridges at Lake Colden and Avalanche Lake- including the adventurous Hitch-Up Matildas, wooden catwalks bolted into rock walls. That stretch was challenging but totally worth it.

We made it back to Marcy Dam before dark and crashed into our tent- exhausted, grateful, and newly engaged.

The next morning, we hiked out and celebrated with breakfast in Lake Placid at The Breakfast Club- the perfect end to an epic trip.
