BEGINNER HIKING CHECKLIST
Here’s a breakdown of what to pack for your first few hikes:
FOOTWEAR
HIKING SHOES OR TRAIL RUNNERS
Comfort and grip are key. Brands like Merrell , Altra , and Salomon are popular with beginners for their comfort and trail performance.
WOOL OR SYNTHETIC SOCKS
I personally love Darn Tough and Smartwool socks- they’re breathable, durable, and honestly so worth every penny.
NAVIGATION TOOLS
Never rely solely on your phone!
- AllTrails App: Download your trail map ahead of time for offline use.
- Paper Map or Guidebook: I recommend National Geographic Trail Maps or a local hiking club’s guide as a solid backup.
WEATHER APPROPRIATE CLOTHING
Layering is key. Wear moisture-wicking base layers, an insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof jacket if needed. Avoid cotton- it retains moisture and can make you cold and miserable!
- Moisture-Wicking Layers: Brands like REI Co-op, Columbia, and Smartwool offer beginner-friendly and affordable layers.
- Rain Jacket or Windbreaker: I swear by my Patagonia Torrentshell and REI Co-op Rainier Rain Jacket. It’s lightweight, packable, and actually keeps me dry.
DAYPACK
A great hiking daypack is a total game changer. Look for something between 15-30L for day hikes.
I recommend the Osprey Daylite or REI Flash 22– they’re lightweight, comfortable, and have just the right amount of space.
WATER + SNACKS
REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE OR HYDRATION RESERVOIR
I love my Klean Kanteen for shorter hikes and Osprey Hydration Reservoir when I need hands-free hydration for longer trails.
HIGH ENERGY SNACKS
Some of my favorite trail snacks are Thunderbird bars, homemade trail mix, dried fruits, and nut butter packets (Trader Joe’s almond butter is a fave!).
EMERGENCY + FIRST AID
- Basic First Aid Kit: I carry a mini Adventure Medical Kits Ultralight/ Watertight pouch for peace of mind
- Dog First Aid Kit– if you’re bringing your pups
- Whistle + Headlamp: Bring a whistle and a small Black Diamond Spot Headlamp
- Optional: InReach Garmin for extra safety and communication in remote areas
SUN + BUG PROTECTION
SUNSCREEN + LIP BALM
I use Kinfield Daily Dew SPF 35 and Kinfield Liplock SPF 15 Balm year-round, clean ingredients and they work.
HAT + SUNGLASSES
Protect your face and eyes from UV and wind.
INSECT REPELLENT
Kinfield Golden Hour is my favorite, it’s a clean-ingredients that smells amazing actually works!
EXTRAS TO CONSIDER
- Trekking Poles: I use the Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles, they’re super light and help with balance.
- Sit Pad or Lightweight Blanket: The Nemo Foam Seat Pad is my go-to for snack breaks or scenic stops.
